KENOSHA, Wis. — With three wins and a tie in its last four games, the Knox College women's soccer team could not make it five unbeaten matches in a row as the Prairie Fire (3-3-1) were nipped by host Carthage College (4-4-1) at Art Keller Field on Saturday afternoon, 1-0.
"This was a really great battle for us against a great team," Prairie Fire head coach Annie Gerdes said. "I am very proud of how we played today and how we continue to grow each game."
The Firebirds kept the pressure on the Knox defense, firing off 16 shots, nine of which were at sophomore keeper Darby Wallig. Only one slipped past her, but that goal in the 18th minute off the foot of Emma Amberg turned out to be the only tally of the contest.
Wallig was particularly stout in the second half, turning away six Carthage shots. Knox had a couple of scoring opportunities after the intermission as well, but both shots were gobbled up by the Firebird keeper Ainsley Stallworth.
- Senior Isabella Shubert had two of Knox's three shots on goal.
- Wallig's streak of four consecutive shutouts and over 400 minutes without allowing a goal ended with the first-half goal.
- This was just the second meeting on the pitch between the two schools, the first being last year when the two teams tied in Galesburg, 1-1.
Next up for Knox is a home tilt with Illinois Wesleyan (4-3) at Jorge Prats Field on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 4:30 p.m. The match will be streamed live with stats for the match available through PrairieFire.Knox.edu, the official website of Knox College Athletics.
