The Knox College men's basketball team ran into a buzzsaw on Tuesday night as Cornell came to town and put on its best performance of the season, winning 92-68. Knox falls to 6-9 overall and 2-4 in the Midwest Conference.
The Prairie Fire struggled against the press defense of the Rams, committing 24 turnovers. Cornell turned those miscues into 24 points, putting Knox in a difficult spot.
The game was tight early, but a 15-5 run by Cornell turned a 14-14 tie into a 29-19 Ram advantage with 6:18 to go in the first half. Cornell kept rolling, taking a 42-28 lead into the break.
The Rams were hot from the field most of the game, but especially in the first half, hitting 13-23 (56.5) shots in the opening 20 minutes. Cornell boosted those numbers by going 4-9 (44.4) from three and 12-13 (92.3) from the free throw line.Â
The Prairie Fire struggled to muster much offense, going 23-63 (36.5 percent) from the field for the game.
Josh Stewart led the charge for Knox, registering his second-straight double-double. Stewart scored 14 points and grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds. Russell Wright added a team-high 16 points. Wright also had six boards.
Carl Dortch added nine points while Noah Campbell and Willie Rogers III each scored eight.
Knox College is next in action on Saturday, hosting Lake Forest at 1 p.m.
