Prairie Fire Fall to Pioneers After Strong Defensive First Half

Knox Hangs with Grinnell for a Half

For a half, the Knox College men's basketball team was able to lock in against Grinnell's high-octane, frantic offense. But in the second half, the Pioneers came to life and left Galesburg with a 98-74 victory.

In the opening 20 minutes, the Prairie Fire (6-11, 2-6) held the Pioneers to their second-lowest first-half offensive output of the season, 38 points.  Unfortunately for Knox, they also struggled to put the ball in the basket, trailing 38-26 at half.

In the second half, both teams' offenses came to life, but not enough for the Prairie Fire, as Grinnell outscored the home squad, 60-48, after the break.

Knox went to work early in the game, scoring the first eight points of the game. Grinnell slowly chipped away, taking the lead for good at 15-12 with 10:49 to go in the first half. The second half was predominantly Grinnell's, as Knox never got the deficit to single digits.

Turnovers proved to be the Prairie Fire bugaboo, as 28 led to 31 Grinnell points. In the first half, Knox held the Pioneers to 12-41 from the floor (29.3 percent), but in the second half, Grinnell was 19-37 (51.4). Knox also struggled in the first half, going 8-35 (22.9 percent), and was also strong in the second half, going 17-25 (68 percent).

Josh Stewart led the Prairie Fire, putting together a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds. Ryan Erdos added 12 points while Russell Wright and Noah Campbell each scored 10. The Prairie Fire hit the road for their next game, visiting Ripon College at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
