GALESBURG, IL - Before Tuesday night's Midwest Conference women's basketball game against Illinois College, Knox College's Bria Medina needed 50 points to tie the program's all-time scoring record. It seemed like an impossible goal, but Medina went for it.
She didn't reach 50 points on Tuesday, but she came close, scoring a career-high 40 points in the Prairie Fire's 98-83 win over the Lady Blues. Medina will try for the all-time record on Saturday when Knox hosts Webster University at 1 p.m.
Medina was efficient, shooting 12-for-18 from the field, 5-for-6 from three-point range, and 11-for-14 from the free-throw line. She also grabbed nine rebounds, handed out five assists, and made five steals.
Medina may have led the way, but she wasn't alone. Kylee Callahan contributed across the board with 22 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, and six steals, nearly reaching a quadruple-double. Nayeli Nidez Acuña added 13 points, Sarah Finley scored eight, Izzy Robinson had seven, and Carly Smith chipped in six.
Knox (8-10, 7-3) had its best offensive game of the season, scoring a season-high 98 points. The team shot 38-for-66 (57.6 percent) from the field. On defense, the Prairie Fire forced 21 turnovers, leading to 21 points, and collected 16 steals.
The game started close, with Knox up 12-11. Then, a 14-3 run over the last two minutes of the first quarter and the first six minutes of the second gave Knox a commanding 26-13 lead.
All night, the Prairie Fire focused on scoring inside, using both drives and passes to rack up 60 points in the paint. Passing was key, as Knox assisted on 28 of its 38 field goals.
This win was important for Knox, moving the Prairie Fire into third place and keeping them in a good spot for a postseason berth in the Midwest Conference Tournament. Knox will play out-of-conference on Saturday, hosting Webster, before traveling to Cornell College next week for a Midwest Conference matchup.
