Prairie Fire Suffer Tough Loss vs. Lawrence

The Knox College baseball team dropped a heartbreaker to Lawrence on Sunday, falling 15-13. The Prairie Fire (5-27, 3-12) led 13-12 with two out in the top of the ninth, but Lawrence had a three-run home run to give the Vikings the win. It was the second-straight game Lawerence rallied in the ninth for a 15-13 win.

On Sunday, Knox trailed 1-0 after the top of the first, but the Prairie Fire tied the game in the bottom of the inning as Clayton Rice's RBI single scored Thomas Wilmot.

After Lawrence scored at the top of the second, Knox struck back with four in the bottom of the inning. Owen Shannon singled home Tyler Thiem, Nicholas Nitti drove home Tyler Kemp and Shannon, then Aidan McMurtrie brought home Nitti.

Lawrence scored two runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 6-5 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, Knox answered with three runs. Wilmot scored on an error. Rice scored on a hit by Thiem. Kemp's RBI groundout brought home McMurtrie.

The game continued with both teams trading scores. Lawrence scored single runs in the top of the fifth and top of the sixth, but Knox responded with four in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Kemp singled home McMurtrie, Nitti's single brought home Kemp and Buckie Zamora, and Owen Shannon capped the inning, scoring on a wild pitch.

But Lawrence did not go away. After Knox took a 12-10 lead in the sixth inning, Lawrence came right back in their half of the sixth with two runs to tie it.

The Prairie Fire reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the seventh as Wilmot cranked a solo home run. After a scoreless eighth, Lawrence had its big top of the ninth, then retired the Knox batters in the bottom half to secure the win.

Nitti led the way with four RBI while Kemp added a pair of runs batted in. Hayden Derlein, Wilmot, McMurtrie, and Thiem all had two hits.
