GALESBURG, IL - The Prairie Fire held possession through most of the afternoon and a late 82nd minute goal broke the scoreless tie as Knox went on to a 1-0 win over Ripon in the conference opener.
Knox took advantage of an 82nd minute goal off the right foot of Sophia Gordoa on their way to a 1-0 victory over Ripon in the opening game of the Midwest Conference season.
The defensive front from Knox played a spectacular game in front of Bri Mahoney, who did not have to make a save. Gwendolynn Stewart and Emma Sineath played lockdown defense in the middle of the field, and Ellie Henderson and Asia Ling held down the outside. Everyone on the backline made it a tough day for the Ripon forwards.
Gordoa's game-winning goal was her first goal of the season and the win was Mahoney's second shutout of the season.
The Prairie Fire will be back in action for their second conference game on Wednesday night when Grinnell comes to town for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff.
