Women's tennis was discontinued after the 2019 fall season.
Prairie Fire tennis emphasizes total player development. Players work on strokes and game strategy, but there's a crucial third element they also work on: sustaining what's commonly known as "mental toughness," the ability to maintain focus and concentration for an entire match.
The Prairie Fire have had 40 women's tennis players named Academic All-Midwest Conference honorees since 2005, keeping with the Knox tradition of combining athletics with academic excellence.
The Prairie Fire play outdoor matches on the Merdian Tennis Courts (resurfaced in July of 2015). During the winter and in inclement weather, the team plays on the indoor courts at T. Fleming Fieldhouse and Lakeside Recreation Facility in Galesburg.
Knox women's tennis players have gone on to a wide variety of successful careers. They include Annette Mandel '75 (English), who has served as the mayor of Crever Couer, Missouri, Jessica Laffey '75 (Psychology), a teaching professional at the Aurora Tennis Club, Marcia Cornett '78 (Economics and Business Administration), a professor and associate dean at Southern Illinois University, and Medha Deoras-Sutliff '88 (Biology), an epidemiologist for the Ohio Department of Health.
