A stand-out baseball player and graduate of Evangel University, Tanner Smith was announced as the Prairie Fire's character coach prior to the 2017 season.
Smith's main objective as the team's character coach is to serve as the liaison between the coaching staff and players. Hiring someone for this position was an initiative under head coach Damon Tomeo to challenge student athletes to become leaders with outstanding character and integrity.
The Grinnell, Iowa native spends most of his day at Northwoods Community Church where he serves as their youth pastor, working directly with 6th through 12th grade students organizing events, encouraging maturity, and building relationships. He has held that position since 2016.
Smith and his wife Alexa reside in Galesburg.
