The Prairie Fire men's soccer team continues to strive for that elusive first Midwest Conference win of the season.
Knox squared off against Illinois College last Saturday in Jacksonville, Illinois. The Blueboys scored goals at the 14:50 and 21:32 marks of the match to take a 2-0 lead after 45 minutes, then added two more scores in the second half to claim a 4-1 victory. The win was the first in league play for IC and snapped a string of five straight losses.
The Prairie Fire avoided being shut out when first-year midfielder Maxwell Gatyas (Plymouth, Wisconsin) scored with 12 seconds left in the match. The goal was the ninth of the season for Gatyas, who also leads his team with 22 points.
IC outshot Knox 14-10 overall and 10-6 on goal. Corey Marin led the Blueboys (3-11, 1-4 MWC) with a pair of goals. Sophomore goalie Robert Porter (Tucson, Arizona) had five saves for the Prairie Fire.
Knox returned home Sunday to play another Midwest Conference match. Grinnell, one of only two MWC teams without a league loss after the weekend's action.
The Prairie Fire played the Pioneers tough, allowing one first-half goal at the 6:30 mark by Charlie Kessner, and trailed 1-0 despite being outshot 15-6 over the first 45 minutes.
Kessner, however, would come back to hurt Knox again when he scored his second goal at 50:46 to give Grinnell a 2-0 lead. The last goal credited to Grinnell at the 61:54 mark was actually scored by a Knox player as several people were around the goal and the Prairie Fire were victimized by bad luck.
