The Prairie Fire swimming teams came out on the short end of their scores against Monmouth College in the first meet of the season in Monmouth, but there were some positives to take from the event.

The Fighting Scots won the women's meet 111-90 and the Monmouth men's team claimed a 152-19 victory.

One of the bright spots for the Prairie Fire women's squad was the performance of junior Rachel Clark (Newton, Iowa).  Clark won the 50 yard freestyle, finished second in the 100 yard freestyle and anchored the victorious 200 yard freestyle relay team that earned the win by just one-tenth of a second.

Clark will be with the team in November and December before embarking on an off-campus program.  Also missing for the remainder of this season will be junior Bess Cooley (Shorewood, Wisconsin).  Cooley performed well in her lone meet this season, winning the 200 yard individual medley and finishing second in the 100 breaststroke.  Like Clark, Cooley will be off campus for the rest of the season.

Junior Tory Kassabaum (St. Louis, Missouri) also had a strong showing for the Prairie Fire.  She won the 100 yard butterfly, the 500 yard freestyle and finished second in the 200 yard freestyle.  Kassabaum was part of the winning 200 yard freestyle relay team - along with junior Anne Heberle (Lodi, California) and sophomore Amanda Lee.

The men's team is without junior Tyler O'Neil (Bloomington, Minnesota) until the next term.  Stepping up for his squad was junior Jeff Wickman (Naperville, Illinois), who finished second in the 200 yard individual medley.

The Prairie Fire will get another shot at the Fighting Scots, and some other teams for that matter, Saturday at the Monmouth Invitational beginning at 11:00 a.m.
