Prairie Fire Splits Dual Meets at Illinois College

The women's swimming team, in terms of winning events, had a perfect day while the men's squad showed improvement in its meet Thursday in Jacksonville, Illinois against Illinois College.

The Prairie Fire women claimed a 446-343 dual meet win against the Lady Blues while the Illinois College men outscored their Knox College counterparts 497-214.  The Fire women's team had first-place finishes in all 11 events for their first dual win of the season.  The men's team came home with four first-place finishes and a second.Zoey Kudla '13

The Prairie Fire women's wins included the 200 Yard Medley Relay and the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay.  The medley relay participants were sophomore Zoey Kudla (Ypsilanti, Michigan), junior Katherine Miller (LaGrange, Illinois), junior Tory Kassabaum (St. Louis, Missouri) and junior Anne Heberle (Lodi, California).  The freestyle relay team included Kassabaum, junior Sarah MacDowell (Rockton, Illinois), Heberle and junior Rachel Clark (Newton, Iowa).

MacDowell, Clark and Kassabaum each won two individual events.  MacDowell finished first in both the 100 and 200 Yard Freestyle, Clark claimed the 200 Yard IM and the 50 Yard Freestyle, and Kassabaum was victorious in the 100 Yard Butterfly and the 500 Yard Freestyle.

Junior Jeff Wickman (Naperville, Illinois) won two individual events -- the 200 Yard IM and the 100 Yard Backstroke -- and he was part of the first-place 200 Yard Freestyle Relay team.  The other swimmers for the winning relay team were junior Kevin Lillie (Wheaton, Illinois), first-year Alex Jandernoa (Grand Haven, Michigan) and junior Jun Cho (Wilmette, Illinois).

Cho also contributed a second place finish in the 200 Yard Freestyle, Jandernoa was first in the 500 Yard Freestyle and Lillie was fourth among eight swimmers in the 100 Yard Freestyle.

The Prairie Fire swimming teams have five weeks before meeting another opponent.  The next meet will be a special one, the first home competition at Lay Natatorium in two seasons.  The Fire welcomes Eureka College for a dual meet January 15 at 11:00 a.m.
