Quick strikes by Eureka College after a scoreless first half were too much for the Knox College men's soccer team to overcome in a 4-1 season-opening, non-conference loss at home.
The Prairie Fire outshot the Red Devils 26 to 20. However, Knox's only score came at the 56:21 mark of the contest when junior
Jeremy Shaw (Columbus, Ohio) connected from the right side unassisted. Shaw scored 17 seconds after Eureka took a 2-0 lead on a goal by Tom Moody.
The Red Devils struck first when Cody Halstead scored 52:04 into the match. Halstead added another goal off of a straight-on shot just into the 87th minute to put his team up 3-1. David Crady tallied his team's fourth goal at the 88:38 mark.
The two teams played to a scoreless draw over the first 45 minutes.
Sophomore goal keeper Robert Porter (Tucson, Arizona) recorded eight saves for Knox, which has to recover quickly as Midwest Conference play is just a few days away.
The Prairie Fire welcomes Lake Forest College Saturday afternoon at 3:30. The busy weekend continues Sunday with a non-conference match-up at home against Franklin College, which is also set to start at 3:30.
