Big Second Half Sends Lawrence Past Knox

Lawrence University got off to a fast start in its Midwest Conference opener against Knox College in Appleton, Wisconsin and went on to win 33-12.

The Vikings (1-1, 1-0 MWC) got on the board 18 seconds into the game when Shawn Martin scored on a 64-yard touchdown run.  The PAT kick failed, keeping the Lawrence lead at 6-0.

The host squad struck again at the 13:30 mark of the first quarter on a 66-yard fumble recovery TD.  A successful extra point made it 13-0.

Knox (0-2, 0-1 MWC) scored its first touchdown of the season with 12:12 to play in the first half when senior quarterback Bill Meyer found junior wide receiver Clarke Cuthbert for a 28-yard scoring pass.  Lawrence blocked the extra point attempt by junior Sam Frank for a 13-6 score. 

Lawerence added two more points on a safety at the 6:38 mark of the first half to go up 15-6.  The Fire responded when Meyer hit Cuthbert again, this time from eight yards out, to get Knox within three at 15-12.  A two-point conversion run after the touchdown was unsuccessful.

The teams played a scoreless third quarter.  Lawrence took over in the final stanza with 18 points on a safety, two touchdowns and a field goal to put the game away.

Cuthbert finished the afternoon with five cathes for 123 yards and two TDs.  Meyer was 8-of-18 passing for 151 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.  Senior Dan Kizior led the Knox rushing attack with 49 yards on 11 carries.

The Prairie Fire turned the ball over five times to the Vikings' three miscues.  Lawrence piled up 404 total yards of offense to Knox's 262.  The Prairie Fire had 19 first downs in the game while the Vikings wound up with 17.

The Fire plays its home opener at the Knosher Bowl September 18 against St. Norbert College (0-2, 0-1 MWC).
