Knox College came up short in its volleyball season opener Wednesday night, falling 3-0 to Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The Kohawks used a balanced effort to down the Prairie Fire 25-20, 25-16, 25-17. Coe tallied 29 kills, including five or more from three different players, to Knox's 19.
Prairie Fire junior Kelly Ricketts (Galesburg, Illinois) recorded a game-high 12 kills. Fellow hitter Kaylie Prince (Westminster, Colorado), a first-year player, contributed four kills and 11 digs in her Knox College debut.
Junior Lisa Blagg (Winthrop Harbor, Illinois) led the Fire with 16 digs and sophomore Kristin McDonald (Chicago, Illinois) added 15. First-year setter Nina Mack (Algonquin, Illinois) paced Knox with 16 assists.
Coach Kim Schrader's squad will meet four different opponents this weekend in the Eureka College Tournament.
Knox plays the first of two matches Saturday at 2 p.m. against host Eureka. The second is at 6 p.m. against Robert Morris University at Springfield. Sunday's tournament schedule finds the Prairie Fire taking on Stephens College at 2 p.m. and Blackburn College at 6 p.m.
