Volleyball Team to "Play for the Cure"

10/7/2011 10:43:00 AM

Two of Knox College's upcoming home volleyball matches, besides being important Midwest Conference contests, will also serve as opportunities to raise money for research and the care of children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases.

The Prairie Fire meets Carroll University Friday, October 7 at 7:00 p.m. and Ripon College Saturday, October 8 at 1:00 p.m. at Memorial Gymnasium.  Both are designated as "Play for the Cure" matches.

The "Play for the Cure" initiative, supported by the Midwest Conference, seeks to promote awareness of early detection of cancer and raise funds dedicated to cancer research and prevention.

Donations will be solicited at both matches to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.  St. Jude is the only pediatric care research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance.  No child is ever denied treatment because of a family's inability to pay.

Special activities are planned during both matches.

The Knox College Student Athlete Advisory Committee will host activities and award prizes between the second and third set of the matches Friday night and Saturday afternoon.  In addition, the Knox College chapter of the national Tri Delta sorority, along with St. Jude, plans to have 50/50 raffles for prizes on Saturday.

Tri Delta’s chosen philanthropy has been Children’s Cancer Charities.  The sorority has been a partner with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital since 1999 and has helped raise more than $9-million.

Donations to St. Jude can also be made online at www.stjude.org.
