Galesburg, IL - The Prairie Fire played very well for 30 minutes, going head-to-head with defending Midwest Conference champ St. Norbert College. The Green Knights came from behind in the last 10 minutes of the game to win 90-75 on Saturday at Memorial Gym.
St. Norbert (6-2, 4-0 MWC) held a slim 40-39 edge at halftime. Knox stayed close by knocking down six 3-point baskets and forcing 17 turnovers in the first half.
The Prairie Fire (1-6, 1-3 MWC), after trailing 56-52 with 13:11 left in the game, went on a 14-1 run to take a 66-57 lead with 9:47 to play.
SNC responded with 10 straight points and led 67-66 when first-year guard
Becky Duffy (Chicago, IL, Northside Prep) split a pair of free throws at the 6:59 mark force a 67-67 tie, the 12th tie of the game.
The Green Knights scored eight unanswered points for a 75-67 advantage with 5:51 left. A basket by senior
Krystyna Williams (Evanston, IL, Evanston Township) closed the gap to 75-69. That's as close as the Prairie Fire managed to get.
St. Norbert scored 13 of the next 15 points for its biggest lead of the game at 88-71 with 50 seconds remaining.
The Knights outscored Knox 50-36 in the second half. The Fire struggled to make long-range shots, going 1-for-12 from behind the 3-point line over the final 20 minutes.
Duffy led Knox with 15 points and junior
Sara Johnson (Grinnell, Iowa, Grinnell) scored 11.
Tasha Giese and Jamie Kuhl each had a double-double for the Knights. Giese scored 23 points and grabbed 15 rebounds while Kuhl had 23 points and 10 boards.
The Prairie Fire goes for its second Midwest Conference victory on Tuesday at winless Lawrence University (0-6, 0-2 MWC). Knox swept the Vikings last season. The game tips off at 5:00 p.m. and will be streamed live online at
