The Prairie Fire fared well in singles play April 10 against Lawrence University, but the Vikings swept the doubles competition to come away with a 6-3 victory on the Knox College campus.
Sophomore David Ham (Lakewood, Washington) won his #3 singles match against LU's Max Zlevor 7-5, 6-4. The Prairie Fire also claimed victories in the #5 and #6 singles matches when first-year players Max Gatyas (Plymouth, Wisconsin) defeated Roy Wimer 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 and Andrei Papancea (Romania) bested Bile Ali 6-3, 6-3.
The Vikings took all three doubles matches. Junior Erik Hane (Littleton, Colorado) and sophomore Shaun Mulani (Boubonnais, Illinois) lost their #1 doubles match against Dunn and Zlevor. Ham and Tilford fell 8-1 against Caleb Ray and Jeremy Andereck and the #3 team of Wimer and Ali got past Gatyas and first-year Caleb Thompson (Galesburg, Illinois) 8-4.
The Prairie Fire lost to St. Ambrose University 7-2 in the first match of the weekend April 9.
Hane accounted for both Knox wins. He beat Santiago Gonzalez 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 in #1 singles then teamed up with Mulani to defeat Andrew Frandsen and Luke Wood in #1 doubles 8-2.
The Prairie Fire, 1-0 in Midwest Conference play, tries to make it two straight league wins against Lake Forest College April 16 at 4:30 p.m. at the Merdian Tennis Courts.
