The Illinois Wesleyan Men's Tennis team found the competition against the Prairie Fire tougher in the teams' match-up April 19 at Lakeside Recreation Center in Galesburg.
The Titans came away with a 9-0 win, but had to survive three close singles matches and a tight doubles match in order to complete the sweep. That wasn't the case when the two squads met last season in Bloomington. The closest match then was an 8-6 win by IWU in #3 doubles play.
Junior Erik Hane (Littleton, Colorado) came up short in his #1 singles match against IWU's Brian Piotrowski 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.
Sophomore David Ham (Lakewood, Washington) posted a 6-3 set victory before falling 6-1 and 10-5 in #3 singles. First-year player Max Gatyas (Plymouth, Wisconsin) won his first set 7-5 against Steve Hayman in #5 singles before Hayman bounced back to take the next two sets 6-4 and 10-6.
Illinois Wesleyan's top doubles pair of Piotrowski and Brian Sorich downed Hane and sophomore Shaun Mulani (Bourbonnais, Illinois) 8-5. Gatyas and first-year player Caleb Thompson (Galesburg, Illinois) came up short in #3 doubles against Aaron Guenther and Aaron Asjes 8-6.
Wesleyan improves to 14-5 overall with the win. The Prairie Fire resumes play April 23 at home against another quality team, Coe College. The Kohawks own a 17-5 record going into the match
