The Prairie Fire played its second straight highly touted opponent strong, winning a pair of singles and one doubles match in a 6-3 loss against Coe College April 23 at the Merdian Tennis Courts.
Junior Erik Hane (Littleton, Colorado) had little trouble defeating the Kohawks' #1 singles player Alex Klaas 6-0, 6-0.
Sophomore David Ham (Lakewood, Washington) also won, defeating his #3 singles opponent Michael Janssen after dropping the first set 6-1.
Three other singles matches were close but went Coe's way.
Sophomore Kenton Tilford (Rochester, Illinois) lost in #4 singles to Doug Land 7-5, 6-4. First-year player Max Gatyas (Plymouth, Wisconsin) won the first set 6-4 in his #5 singles match against Prateek Haralalka before dropping the next two 7-6 (11-9), 6-3. First-year Andrei Papancea (Romania) also posted a 6-4 win in the first set of his #6 singles against Tyler Wilson. Wilson came back to win the next two 6-4, 6-3.
Hane and his #1 doubles partner, sophomore Sean Mulani (Bourbonnais, Illinois), defeated Coe's Sean Stokstad and Janssen in a hard-fought match 9-8 (7-1).
The Kohawks (18-5) claimed the #2 and #3 doubles matches to earn the victory.
The Prairie Fire hosts Midwest Conference leader Grinnell College and Monmouth College April 30 at home. The first match starts at 8:00 a.m.
