The Prairie Fire had a tough time against the top two teams in the Midwest Conference South Division April 30 at home, dropping matches to Grinnell College 9-0 and Monmouth College 8-1.
Grinnell (20-7, 4-0 MWC) and Monmouth (19-6, 3-1 MWC) qualified for the MWC Men's Tennis Team Championship May 6 in Rockford at the Boylan Tennis Center. Joining them from the MWC North are St. Norbert College (9-11, 4-0 MWC) and Carroll University (15-7, 3-1 MWC).
The Pioneers, winners of the last seven conference championships and eight of the last nine, claimed their 11th straight Midwest Conference South Division crown in 2011 with wins against the Prairie Fire and Monmouth (8-1) on April 30. Grinnell hasn't lost a match in divisional play since 2000.
First-year player Andrei Papancea (Romania) had the lone victory of the day for the Prairie Fire in his #6 singles match against Monmouth's Kevin Miehlke 6-4, 4-6, 10-8. Sophomore Shaun Mulani (Bourbonnais, Illinois) battled hard in his #2 singles match against the Scots' David Johnson but came up short 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
The Prairie Fire concluded the regular season 2-17 overall and 1-3 in MWC South play. The team travels to Madison, Wisconsin for the Midwest Conference Doubles and Singles Championships May 7 and 8.
