Eureka, IL - A goal by Eureka College late in the second half was the difference as the host Red Devils beat the Prairie Fire 4-3 in a non-conference match on Wednesday.
The Red Devils got on the board first when Derek Johnson scored on a penalty kick 1:46 into the match. Knox was credited with an own goal at 24:11 to tie the match at 1-1.
Sophomore Maxwell Gatyas (Plymouth, WI, Plymouth High School) put the Prairie Fire on top 2-1 with five seconds left in the first half when he scored his first goal of the season, assisted by sophomore Prajwal Taludhar (Kathmandu, Nepal, St. George's School).
Eureka (1-1) tied the match at 2-2 at the 54:43 mark on Johnson's second goal. The Red Devils reclaimed the lead at 3-2 less than two minutes later on an unassisted goal by Tom Moody at 56:31.
Knox junior Donald Tchopya (San Francisco, CA, Galileo Academy of Science and Technology) tied the score at 3-3 off a pass from sophomore Christian Perez (Saint Paul, MN, Como Park Senior High School) at 65:12. The Red Devils scored the winning goal when Cody Halstead found the back of the net with 9:02 to play.
The Prairie Fire outshot Eureka 15-5 in the first half and 29-17 overall. Knox had 11 shots on goal to eight for the Red Devils.
The Prairie Fire came up just short in a bid for a second straight win after downing MacMurray College 5-4 Monday afternoon in the team's home opener at Jorge Prats Field.
Knox looks to bounce back Saturday afternoon at Culver Stockton College in Canton, Missouri.
The Wildcats (0-2) lost their first two matches of the season by identical 1-0 scores against Spalding University (KY) at home on September 1 and at St. Ambrose University on September 4.
