Prairie Fire vs. Alverno College  - THIRD PLACE MATCH

Knox came up short of taking home the third place trophy in a second straight match against Alverno College.

The Inferno (3-10), after posting a 3-0 win against the Prairie Fire in each team’s first match of the day, defeated Knox 3-1.

Alverno won the first set 25-19.  The Prairie Fire (1-10) rebounded to take the second set 25-15.  The Inferno, in a match that featured five ties and two lead changes, won the third set 25-23.  The fourth set was also close -- five ties and three lead changes -- ended with Alverno coming out on top 25-21.

Junior Amber Eisha (South Wilmington, IL, Gardner-South Wilmington) led Knox (1-10) with 14 kills and three aces.  She also had nine digs and 1.5 blocks.  Junior Kaylie Prince (Westminster, CO, Standley Lake) added 12 kills, 10 digs, and two aces.  Sophomore Becky Duffy (Chicago, IL, Northside Prep) had a season-high 10 kills, first-year setter Casey Stachelski (Joliet, IL, Plainfield) contributed 26 assists and senior Kristin McDonald (Chicago, IL, Regina Dominican) had 13 digs, five assists and a pair of aces.

Knox resumes play on September 21 at 3:00 p.m. against William Penn University in the Prairie Fire Invitational Tournament at Memorial Gym.

Prairie Fire vs. Alverno College  (MATCH 3)

Host Alverno College downed Knox 3-0 in the first of two straight matches between the teams on Saturday.

The Prairie Fire (1-9) lost three close sets 20-25, 24-26, 25-19.  The first set featured two ties and two lead changes.  There were 11 ties and six lead changes in the second set.  The third set had one tie, at 3-3, before the Inferno took a 4-3 advantage and never looked back.

Senior Kristin McDonald (Chicago, IL, Regina Dominican) led Knox with 11 kills and added six digs.  Junior Kaylie Prince (Westminster, CO, Standley Lake) contributed seven kills and five digs while first-year Casey Stachelski (Joliet, IL, Plainfield) had 15 assists and tied for match-high honors with 14 digs.

Alverno (2-10) and Knox will play again in the third place game on Saturday.  The Inferno earned its first win of the tournament after falling 3-0 to Augustana College and Beloit College on Friday.

Prairie Fire vs. Beloit College

Knox rebounded from a first set loss to Beloit with three straight wins to defeat the Buccaneers 18-25, 25-15, 25-20, 26-24 in a tussle of two Midwest Conference schools.

The victory was the first of the season for the Prairie Fire (1-8).  Beloit, which won its first match earlier in the tournament against host Alverno College, falls to 1-10.  Both teams remain alive for the third place and championship matches on September 15.  Knox plays Alverno, which started 0-2, and Beloit meets Augustana.

Junior Kaylie Prince (Westminster, CO, Standley Lake) had a season-high 16 kills. Senior Kristin McDonald (Chicago, IL, Regina Dominican) added 14 kills and 11 digs while first-year setter Casey Stachelski (Joliet, IL, Plainfield) had 40 assists and 26 digs.  The Prairie Fire also got a big contribution from junior Amber Eisha (South Wilmington, IL, Gardner-South Wilmington) with 15 kills and nine digs.

Knox’s match against host Alverno College (1-9) is September 15 at 10:00 a.m.

Prairie Fire vs. Augustana College

Knox lost its tournament opener against Augustana College 16-26, 16-25, 11-25. 

The Vikings (6-2), 2-0 against Knox this season after winning the first matchup 3-0 on September 1, led the first set wire-to-wire.  The second set had four ties and four lead changes and the third set included two ties and the lead changed hands twice. 

Prince had five kills and five digs for the Prairie Fire.  Stachelski had team-highs of 11 assists and six digs.  Knox (0-8) plays Midwest Conference member Beloit College (1-9) in the second match of the day for both schools. 

The Buccaneers defeated host Alverno College 3-0 in their first match.
