Track and Field Teams Score Two First Place Performances at IWU

Chenoweth first in shot put, women's team wins distance medley relay

Bloomington, IL – The Prairie Fire teams combined for four top five finishes, including two event victories at the Titan Open hosted on Saturday by Illinois Wesleyan University.

The Knox women's team placed fifth out of 13 teams while the men finished ninth in the team standings. 

Illinois Wesleyan's women's team placed first with 82 points.  The runner-up was Lincoln College with 67 followed by Lewis University with 59 points in third, Maryville University in fourth with 57 points, and Chicago State fifth with 31.

Lewis University was the men's team champion with 183 points followed by host Illinois Wesleyan in second place with 114, Maryville University in third with 64, and Chicago State fourth with 47 points.

Placing first for the Knox men was junior Weston Chenoweth (Canton, IL, Canton) in the shot put with his throw of 44' 7" that scored 10 points.  The Knox women’s distance medley relay team also finished first in 14:16.71, the 10th fastest time in the event in school history.

The relay runners were senior Lizzy Warner (Champaign, IL, University Laboratory) and first-years Lizzy Reyes (Oak Park, IL, Oak Park-River Forest), Grace Neubauer (Inverness, IL, William Fremd), and Carolina Goncalves (Chicago, IL, Walter Payton Prep).

Senior Joe Puntoriero (Cheektowaga, NY, Cleveland Hill) placed fifth in the 60 meter dash qualifying and the 400 meter run.  His 60 meter time of :07.29 ranks fifth on the all-time performance list while he racked up points for the Prairie Fire for his effort in the 400 meters.

Senior Paul Lebryk (Glenview, IL, Glenbrook South) had the other fifth place finish in the weight throw.  His distance of 44' 8 1/4" scored points for the men’s team and ranks #5 on the all-time individual list.

Senior Sean Choate (Chicago, IL, Chicago Academy) added three more all-time top 10 times for his efforts in the mile and the 3000 meters.

Choate ran a career-best 4:39.11 in the mile to move up to #9 on the all-time performance list and #5 on the all-time individual list.  He placed 10th overall out of 45 runners.  First-year Victor Schultz (Staunton, VA, Robert E Lee) ran his best time to date in the mile as well, crossing the finish line in 4:51.10.  Schultz is tied for #9 on the all-time individual list.

Choate’s time of 9:14.66 in the 3000 meters shaved more than 10 seconds off his previous fastest time of 9:24.86 established earlier this season.  He moved up from #10 to #7 on the all-time individual list in the event and finished 10th out of 28 runners.

The Prairie Fire men’s team also scored in the 4x400 meter relay by placing seventh.  Knox’s foursome of Puntoriero, juniors Bobby Mueller (Woodridge, IL, Downers Grove South) and Matt Brongo (Eureka, IL, Eureka), and first-year Ian Horne (Albuquerque, NM, La Cueva) finished in a time of 3:39.02.

The Prairie Fire teams travel to Grinnell College to participate in the ACM Indoor Invite on February 2.  The meet is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
