Box Score
Galesburg, IL – The Prairie Fire ran their their winning streak to 11 with a 2-1 overtime thriller against Grinnell College on Saturday at Jorge Prats Field.
The winning goal by Knox was a great shot by sophomore
Nathaniel Logie (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Queens Royal College) after a cross from first-year
Andy Van Buskirk (Overland Park, KS, Rockhurst) with just seven seconds remaining in the extra period. The goal was Logie's 14th of the year.
Prairie Fire first-year forward
Terence Lau (Shanghai, China, Shanghai American School) started strong by scoring 15:41 into the match. Lau received a deflection at the top left corner of the goal box, dribbled, and set himself up for a well-placed kick into the upper corner of the far right side of the goal just outside of the reach of Grinnell goalie Major May.
Grinnell (3-7, 1-3 MWC) answered back with a goal by Joseph Brown at the 37:14 mark. The Pioneers had a corner kick and Knox had difficulty clearing the ball. Prairie Fire junior goalie
Sean Dockrell (Dublin, Ireland, San Bernadino CC) came out and attempted to snag the ball after two deflections, but it was kicked just before he could reach it to Brown, who was able to easily tap the ball into the net.
Dockrell had a powerful talk with the defense about the play at halftime, emphasizing communication. The defense blanked Grinnell the rest of the match.
The intense contest remained scoreless until the 99:53 mark.
Van Buskirk gained possession of the ball around midfield, pushed up the right side of the field and found Logie near the center of the field inside the box for one of the brief moments he was not blanketed by a defender. That proved to be a costly moment for Grinnell as Logie set the pass at his feet and put in a low shot to the bottom left corner of the goal.
Knox (11-1, 4-0 MWC) outshot the Pioneers 23-9 overall and 15-6 on goal. Dockrell, who improved to 11-0 in goal this season, had five saves for the Prairie Fire.
Knox set a new school record for wins in a season with 11 and defeated Grinnell for the first time since 2005.
The Prairie Fire look to make it 12 straight victories and five in a row in the Midwest Conference at Illinois College on October 8 at 1:30.
The next and final home match of the regular season for Knox is a Homecoming clash on October 19 against preseason Midwest Conference favorite Lake Forest College at 1:30.
