Galesburg, IL – The historic rivalry on the gridiron between Knox College and Monmouth College is renewed on Stisser Field at the Knosher Bowl on Saturday, November 16.
The schools will meet in the 125th annual Bronze Turkey game that dates back to 1888. Monmouth (4-5, 4-4 MWC) holds a 64-50-10 advantage in the all-time series against Knox (1-8, 1-7 MWC) after winning a 49-35 shootout last season in Monmouth.
The Prairie Fire are hosting this year's contest after playing the last two on the road.
The
2012 Bronze Turkey game was a wild affair. The teams combined for 12 touchdowns, 873 yards of offense, 585 yards and eight TDs on the ground, and 50 first downs.
More than one of the oldest football rivalries in the country, the game is a tradition.
Seven things you might not know about the Turkey BowlThe 2013 edition of the Bronze Turkey game will also feature two record-setting running backs.
Seniors
Derek Mortensen (Crystal Lake, IL, Crystal Lake South) of Knox and Trey Yocum of Monmouth are the all-time rushing leaders at their respective schools and both are having big time seasons.
Mortensen set or tied 10 school records last season and has equaled that feat this year. He enters the game against the Fighting Scots with career totals of 3798 rushing yards, 43 touchdowns, and 264 points scored. His career average of 94.95 yards per game tops the previous 88-year old Knox all-time mark of 94.8 yards per game by Bill Senn from 1923-25.
Mortensen ran for a career-high 246 yards, the third-most in the
Midwest Conference this season, and scored three touchdowns at Lawrence University on November 9. He's rushed for 100 or more yards eight times this season (school record) and has at least one touchdown on the ground in seven straight games – a record shared with Drew Sherman (1998-99).
Mortensen ranks fourth in the Midwest Conference this season in rushing yards (1162), fifth in rushing touchdowns (12), and he's fifth in the league averaging 129.1 rushing yards per game.
Yocum is only the second Monmouth running back to rush for more than 1000 yards in three straight seasons after he piled up a school record 277 yards, the most in the MWC this year, in week seven against Lawrence. He's surpassed 100 yards rushing seven times this season – including games of 194 and 192 – and scored at least one touchdown carrying the football in seven games.
Yocum, a native of nearby Bushnell, is second in the conference in rushing yards (1343) and rushing touchdowns (15), and he ranks third averaging 149.2 yards rushing per game.
The Prairie Fire will recognize the 14 seniors on the team prior to the contest, and then try to reclaim the Bronze Turkey.
