Galesburg, Ill. – Monmouth College withstood a rally by the Prairie Fire and prevailed 102-83 in Midwest Conference play on Tuesday night at Memorial Gym.
A bucket by first-year
Molly Lascelles (Ipava, IL, VIT) started the scoring for Knox. The Fighting Scots answered with a 12-0 run and a 10 point lead at the 16:49 mark. A 3-pointer by sophomore
Jamie Blue (Urbana, IL, University) trimmed a 14-4 Monmouth lead in half a minute later.
The Scots (6-2, 3-2 MWC) got on a roll after that with a 28-12 run that gave them their biggest lead of the half, 42-19, with just under 5:00 to play.
Knox (1-6, 0-3 MWC) refused to go away and outscored Monmouth 21-9 to go into halftime still very much within striking distance, trailing 51-40.
The Prairie Fire whittled the lead down to nine after Lascelles started the second half like she began the game – with a basket. However, the Fighting Scots followed with a 16-2 run for a 67-44 lead with 16:42 to play.
Knox continued its pressure defense and fought to get back in the game, but couldn't get any closer than 17 when senior
Chantal Heckman (Chicago, IL, Latin) scored to make it 80-63 with 9:30 remaining.
The Prairie Fire connected on 11 3-point baskets and shot 32.5 percent in the game. Monmouth hit 47 percent from the field and outrebounded Knox 60-38.
Heckman led all scorers with 20 points. Blue added 15 points, all in the first half, and senior
Grace Theisen (Minneapolis, MN, Southwest) scored 10 points for the Prairie Fire.
Knox plays its final home game of 2013 on Saturday against Lawrence University. The tip-off is scheduled at 3:00 p.m.
