Results all three days

The swimming teams finished the conference meet in the same positions they were in after the first day of competition.

The Prairie Fire women's team added 42 points on Sunday, the last day of the championships, to finish with 156 points and in eighth place in the Midwest Conference.  The Prairie Fire men's squad scored 21 points on the final day for a three-day total of 76 and a ninth place finish.

The women's team wound up 49 points ahead of ninth place Ripon College (107) and 29.5 points behind seventh place Illinois College (185.5).  Host Grinnell (892) passed Lake Forest College (875.5) on Sunday to win the team title, the Pioneers' 14th conference championship in the past 15 years, while the Foresters placed second. 

There were no other changes in the women's standings between Saturday and Sunday.  Monmouth College (420.5) finished third, Lawrence University (408) was just 12.5 points behind the Fighting Scots to place fourth, Carroll University (289.5) was a distant fifth, and Beloit College (220) finished sixth.

Grinnell also won the men's championship with 923 points, the Pioneers' 12th straight Midwest Conference title.   Lake Forest (827) placed second while Monmouth (374) moved up to third place, switching spots on Sunday with fourth place Carroll (334).  Lawrence (291) was fifth and Illinois College (237) sixth.  Beloit (228), Ripon (163), and Knox placed seventh through ninth.

Six Knox women's swimmers scored in individual events on Sunday.

Susannah Lodge-Rigal (Bloomington, IN, Bloomington) finished 11th and Madeline Troy (Naperville, IL, Naperville North) 12th in the 1650 freestyle.  Colleen Shelly (Galesburg, IL, Galesburg) placed 14th and Maddie Boehm (Kenosha, WI, Harborside Academy) 15th in the 100 freestyle while Taylor Wayment (Littleton, CO, Lakewood) was 14th in the 200 breaststroke.

The women's 400 freestyle relay team added 22 points with an eighth place finish.  Swimming a leg in the relay were Lodge-Rigal, Marie Anderson (Pleasant Hill, CA, Athenian School), Boehm, and Shelly.

Chris Walsh (Boulder, CO, Shining Mountain Waldorf School) scored after placing 15th in the 100 freestyle.  He also teamed up with Sam Chen (Englewood, CO, Cherry Creek), Peter Liao (Hsinchu, Taiwan, Hsinchu American School), and Niko Kontos (Northbrook, IL, Glenbrook South) for a ninth place finish in the 400 freestyle relay.

Conference officials announced the annual awards following the meet.

Michael Brus of Grinnell was named the Men's Swimmer of the Year and Grinnell's Hayley Levin won the Women's Swimmer of the Year award.  The Men's Diver of the Year honor went to Alex Mishun of Grinnell while Christina Pekar of Lake Forest won the Women's Diver of the Year award.  Lake Forest coach Vadim Tashlitsky was the recipient of the Men's Coach of the Year and Grinnell's Erin Hurley was named the Women's Coach of the Year.

Day 2 Results

The Knox swimming teams did not change their positions in the standings after the second day of the Midwest Conference Championships.

The Prairie Fire women's squad added 70 points on Saturday and remains in eighth place with 114 total points, 21.5 behind seventh place Illinois College and 36 points ahead of ninth place Ripon College.

Lake Forest College leads the women's standings with 638.5 points, 28.5 ahead of second place Grinnell College.  Monmouth College (292.5), Lawrence University (292), and Carroll University (209.5) currently hold the third through fifth place spots.

The Knox men's team added 35 points on Saturday and has 56 through the first two days of the meet.  Grinnell (633), Lake Forest (546), Carroll (264), Monmouth (259), and Lawrence (196) are the top five teams.  Carroll gained a slight bit of separation from Monmouth after the two were tied for third after the first day in the pool.

The Prairie Fire's highest individual placement so far is by Chris Walsh (Boulder, CO, Shining Mountain Waldorf School), who finished seventh in the 100 backstroke.  The women's team received a strong performance from Zoey Kudla (Ypsilanti, MI, Greenhills School), who placed 10th in the 400 IM.

Others scoring points for the two Knox teams were Marie Anderson (Pleasant Hill, CA, Athenian School) in the 100 backstroke (12th place), Maddie Boehm (Kenosha, WI, Harborside Academy) in the 100 butterfly (13th place), Colleen Shelly (Galesburg, IL, Galesburg) in the 100 breaststroke (13th place), Taylor Wayment (Littleton, CO, Lakewood) in the 100 breaststroke (15th place), and Sam Chen (Englewood, CO, Cherry Creek) in the 100 breaststroke (16th place).

The women's team finished sixth in the 800 freestyle relay and eighth in the 200 medley relay for a combined 48 points.  The men's squad also placed eighth in the 200 medley relay with Walsh, Nick Polizos (Hoffman Estates, IL, Barrington Community), Chen, and Liao each swimming a leg.

Kudla, Shelly, Boehm, and Anderson swam in the 200 medley relay for the Knox women.  The swimmers for the Fire in the 800 free relay were sophomore Madeline Troy (Naperville, IL, Naperville North), sophomore ShirJia Bielefeld (Weston, WI, D C Everest), Anderson, and Susannah Lodge-Rigal (Bloomington, IN, Bloomington).

The swimmers have one more day to gather as many points as possible with the meet wrapping up on Sunday.

Day 1 Results

The Prairie Fire began their run for a strong placement in the league this season on Friday, the first day of the Midwest Conference Swimming and Diving Championships.

The Knox women's team scored 44 points on the opening day of the meet, all the result of eighth place finishes in the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 medley relay.

The Prairie Fire women will begin the second day at the MWC Championships in eighth place out of nine teams.

The Knox men's team scored 23 points and ended the day in ninth place.  The Fire scored 18 points with a ninth place finish in the 400 medley relay and three points when first-year Chris Walsh (Boulder, CO, Shining Mountain Waldorf School) placed 14th in the 50 yard freestyle.

The women's swimmers in the relays that scored were junior Marie Anderson (Pleasant Hill, CA, Athenian School), first-years Taylor Wayment (Littleton, CO, Lakewood) and Maddie Boehm (Kenosha, WI, Harborside Academy), sophomore Colleen Shelly (Galesburg, IL, Galesburg), senior Zoey Kudla (Ypsilanti, MI, Greenhills School), and sophomore Susannah Lodge-Rigal (Bloomington, IN, Bloomington).

The men's swimmers in the relay that scored points for Knox were Walsh, first-years Sam Chen (Englewood, CO, Cherry Creek) and Peter Liao (Hsinchu, Taiwan, Hsinchu American School), and sophomore Nick Polizos (Hoffman Estates, IL, Barrington Community).

"I'm really proud of how (our teams) are performing.  Just about everyone is swimming season-best times, and some have really dropped a lot of time," coach Jonathan Powers said.

Lake Forest leads the women's team standings after the first day with 288.5 points.  Host Grinnell College is second (263), Monmouth College third (154.5), Lawrence University fourth (125), and Carroll University (90.5) fifth.  Knox (44) trails sixth place Beloit College (65) by 21 points, seventh place Illinois College (60.5) by 16.5 points, and leads ninth place Ripon (36) by eight points.

Grinnell leads the men's team standings with 277 points followed by Lake Forest (226), Carroll (118), Monmouth (118), and Lawrence (85) in the top five.  Beloit (73) is in sixth place with a one point lead over seventh place Illinois College (72), followed by Ripon (60) and Knox (21).

The swimming picks back up at 10:00 Saturday morning.
