Galesburg, IL – The Prairie Fire came up short in a bid to end a string of two straight losses in a non-conference match against Carroll University.
The Pioneers (3-4), meanwhile, stopped their own streak of back-to-back defeats with an 8-1 victory on Saturday against Knox at Lakeside Tennis Center.
The lone win for the Prairie Fire (4-6) was by sophomore Walter Palmer (Wilmette, IL, New Trier). Palmer won his #3 singles match against Carroll’s Ryne Fertitta 6-4, 7-5 to improve his record to 7-3 on the season.
Palmer and sophomore Karl Ruzgas (Downers Grove, IL, Downers Grove North) dropped a close #1 doubles match to Carroll, 9-7. The Pioneers also won a closely contested #2 doubles match, 8-6, against senior David Ham (Lakewood, WA, Shadow Ridge) and sophomore Jonathan Ng (Hong Kong, China, Hong Kong International School).
Knox resumes play on Sunday at 12:00 against Illinois Wesleyan University at Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington.
The Titans lost the only match they’ve played during the spring season 9-0 against the University of St. Francis (IL) in Lockport, Illinois on February 23.
