Orlando, FL – The Prairie Fire’s last match in Florida didn’t go the way the team had hoped.
Calvin College (3-1) swept the singles and doubles matches for a 9-0 win against Knox.
Prairie Fire sophomore Karl Ruzgas (Downers Grove, IL, Downers Grove North) made his #1 singles opponent, Brian DeMaagd, work hard in a match that went three sets. Ruzgas took the first set 6-3 before DeMaagd won the next two 6-1 and 10-3.
In the other singles matches sophomore Walter Palmer (Wilmette, IL, New Trier) lost 6-1 and 6-0 in the #2 flight, sophomore Jonathan Ng (Hong Kong, China, Hong Kong International School) fell 6-4 and 6-1 at #3, senior David Ham (Lakewood, WA, Shadow Ridge) dropped his #4 match 6-0 and 6-0, first-year Dustin Loch (Glen Ellyn, IL, Glenbard West) was outscored 6-1 and 6-0 by his #5 singles opponent, and first-year Pragyaditya Mukerjee (Kolkata, India, The Cambridge School) lost in #6 singles 6-0 and 6-2.
The Prairie Fire’s #1 doubles team of Ruzgas and Palmer lost 8-5, Ng and Ham dropped their #2 doubles match 8-5, while Loch and senior Mike Carr (Niles, IL, Niles Notre Dame) fell 8-1.
Next up for the Prairie Fire (4-11) are two non-conference matches at Lawrence University (5-5) and Ripon College (1-7) on March 30. The start time against the Vikings will be at approximately 1:30 p.m. followed by the contest against the Red Hawks around 5:30 p.m.
