Tennis Teams Win at Eureka

Eureka, IL – The Prairie Fire tennis teams swept a pair of non-conference matches against Eureka College on Friday.

The Knox men’s squad shut out the Red Devils 9-0 while the Knox women’s team, playing its first match of the spring season, defeated Eureka 5-4.

The Prairie Fire men allowed only three match points in singles play and one in doubles competition against the Red Devils, who did not have players to compete in #5 and #6 singles, as well as #3 doubles.

Sophomore Jonathan Ng (Hong Kong, China, Hong Kong International School), playing #1 singles for the first time this season, won 6-0, 6-0.  SeniorDavid Ham (Lakewood, WA, Shadow Ridge) was moved up to #2 singles and swept his way to victory.  First-year Dustin Loch (Glen Ellyn, IL, Glenbard West) defeated his #3 singles opponent and senior Mike Carr (Niles, IL, Niles Notre Dame ) was a winner at #4 singles.

Sophomores Walter Palmer (Wilmette, IL, New Trier) and  Karolis Ruzgas (Downers Grove, IL, Downers Grove North) won their #1 doubles match 8-1 -- their 10th win of the season -- while Loch and first-year Pragyaditya Mukerjee (Kolkata, India, The Cambridge School) posted an 8-1 victory in #2 doubles.

Knox (6-12) surpassed last season’s win total with the victory against Eureka with five regular season matches remaining.  The team has two Midwest Conference South Division contests on Saturday against Illinois College (0-7, 0-1 MWC South) and Monmouth College (6-6, 0-0 MWC South) in Monmouth.

The Knox women’s team won three singles and two doubles matches to come away with the victory against the Red Devils.

The winners for the Prairie Fire were junior Charlotte Garvin (Omaha, NE, Central) at #2 singles, senior Emily Tyl (Downers Grove, IL, Benet Academy) at #3 singles, senior Aimee Neilan (Lake in the Hills, IL, Jacobs) at #4 singles and first-year Keegan Dohm (Belingham, WA, Squalicum) at #5 singles in her Knox women’s tennis debut.  Tyl and Neilan won their #2 doubles match 8-0 for the Prairie Fire (6-8).

Knox resumes play against St. Ambrose University at home on Monday at 3:30 pm.
