Galesburg, IL – The Prairie Fire suffered a 6-0 season-opening loss against #25 ranked DePauw University on Saturday at Jorge Prats Field.
The Tigers (2-0-0) won their first match of the 2013 season, 2-1 at home against Centre College on Friday night. DePauw is coming off a season that included a 14-2-5 overall record, a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) tournament title, and a trip to the second round of the 2012 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship.
The postseason appearance was the 10th for the Tigers in men's soccer.
DePauw scored the first goal of the match, which proved to be the winner, against the Prairie Fire (0-1-0) on a header by Andy Morrison at the 8:42 mark. The Tigers doubled their lead when Mark Reavis launched a long shot that found the back of the net at 10:05.
DePauw added two more goals in the first stanza to take a 4-0 lead into the break.
Julian Gonzalez punched in both Tiger scores over the final 45:00 of play.
DePauw's defense, which recorded 11 shutouts last season and permitted a stingy 0.90 goals per game average, gave up just one shot on goal by Knox. The Tigers fired 12 shots at first-year Knox goalie
James Young (Bayfield, CO, Bayfield), who had six saves in his college debut.
DePauw outshot the Prairie Fire 19-7 overall.
Knox resumes play on September 4 against Rockford University (0-2-0) at
Jorge Prats Field. The match is slated to begin at 4:00 p.m. The Prairie Fire
defeated the Regents 2-1 in Rockford last season.
Rockford lost its first two matches by combined scores of 12-0. RU dropped its season-opener 3-0 at Defiance College (OH) followed by a 9-0 setback against Westminster College (PA). Both contests were part of the Purple and Gold Classic hosted by Defiance on August 30-31.
