Offensive Surge Lifts Rams Past Women's Soccer Team

Galesburg, IL – The Prairie Fire suffered a lopsided Midwest Conference defeat against Cornell College on Saturday at Jorge Prats Field.

The Rams ended a stretch of four straight losses, during which they scored just two goals combined, with an 11-0 win over Knox.  The defeat is the third straight for the Prairie Fire, all against league foes.

Cornell (4-5-0, 1-3-0) did all of its scoring in the first 45:00 of the match.  The first three goals came within 90 seconds of each other.

The Rams took a 1-0 lead at the 14:06 mark on a score by Emily Snider, who had a big afternoon.  Cornell's second goal occurred 15:07 into the match, and the lead grew to 3-0 at 15:36.

Snider made it 5-0 with two more goals 36 seconds apart late in the 20th minute and early in the 21 minute.  The Rams increased their advantage to 6-0 at the 24:30 mark before Snider kicked through her fourth and fifth goals of the match 1:40 apart at 30:56 and 32:36.

A second Cornell player, Bethany Stivers, also had a hat-trick with her second and third goals in the 36th minute and one tick before the 42nd minute to put her team on top 10-0.

The Rams scored for the last time 1:45 before the end of the first period.

Cornell held a big advantage in total shots, 35-3.  Senior goalie Rachael Koene (Golden Valley, MN, Benilde-St. Margaret's) had 12 saves and first-year Theresa Birzer (Fort Dodge, IA, Fort Dodge) stopped five more shots on goal for the Prairie Fire.

Knox (5-5-0, 0-3-0 MWC) tries to regroup with another Midwest Conference contest against Grinnell College at home on October 5 at 11:00 a.m.

The Pioneers (6-4-0, 3-1-0 MWC) are in a tie for second place in the conference following shutout wins at home against Carroll University (1-0) on September 22 and Beloit College (6-0) on Saturday. 

Augustana College snapped Grinnell's two-game win streak with a 4-0 victory in Moline on September 29.
