Women's Soccer Tripped Up by IC

GALESBURG, Illinois – A goal with a little over 15 minutes to play in regulation was the difference as the Prairie Fire fell to Illinois College 2-1 in Midwest Conference play Wednesday at Jorge Prats Field.

Knox didn't take long to get on the board, scoring 4:35 into the match on a goal by first-year Kayla Brown (Sacramento, CA, Wilton Christian) – her team-leading eighth – for a 1-0 lead in the last home contest of the season.

IC came right back with a goal at the 6:18 mark to tie the Prairie Fire, 1-1.  The teams remained deadlocked until the Lady Blues put a corner kick in play and scored on a deflection for a 2-1 lead 74:22 into the contest.

Knox (3-13, 0-9 MWC) was unable to come back with a goal over the remaining 15-plus minutes to tie the match and send it into overtime.

IC (10-5-2, 4-3-2 MWC) outshot the Prairie Fire 7-2 on goal and 17-4 overall.  Brown led Knox with three shots on the offensive end while sophomore goalkeeper Theresa Birzer (Fort Dodge, IA, Fort Dodge) recorded five saves.

The Prairie Fire have hung tough with their last two opponents, both of them among four squads trying to secure two remaining spots in the four-team Midwest Conference tournament. Knox lost 1-0 to St. Norbert College four days ago at home.  The Green Knights and Illinois College are a combined 9-6-3 in league play.

Regular season champion and undefeated Lake Forest College (17-0, 9-0 MWC – 27 conference points) and Ripon College (11-6, 7-2 MWC – 21 conference points) have qualified for the MWC tourney.  The two other teams in the hunt for tournament berths are Grinnell College (10-6-1, 6-2-1 MWC – 19 conference points) and Carroll University (6-8-2, 5-2-2 MWC – 17 conference points).

Knox finishes the 2014 campaign at Lake Forest on Saturday, November 1 at 2:30 p.m.  The Foresters are ranked 16th in the country in the latest d3soccer.com poll and 17th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll.
