Millikin Trips Up Women's Soccer in Opener

DECATUR, Illinois – The Prairie Fire couldn't match the offensive punch of Millikin University and lost their first match of the 2014 season 3-0 on Friday.

Knox (0-1) hung close with the Big Blue and faced a slim 1-0 deficit at the intermission despite being outshot 7-2.  Millikin's lone goal during the opening stanza was off a corner kick at the 19:32 mark.

The hosts doubled their lead at 2-0 with a score 65:11 into the contest before connecting the last time in the match a little over 20:00 later.

Millikin (1-0), which now owns five consecutive wins against Knox since the 2007 season, held a 19-5 edge in total shots - including 12-3 over the final 45 minutes of play.

Knox sophomore goalie Theresa Birzer (Fort Dodge, IA, Fort Dodge) recorded seven saves in the defeat.

The Prairie Fire got off five shots in the contest led by first-year Shea Pierce (Joliet, IL, Joliet West) with two.

Knox plays next in the ACM Tournament from September 5-7 in Northfield, Minnesota.  The Prairie Fire will square off first against Carleton College on September 5 at 4:00 p.m. before taking on Coe College on September 7 at 10:00 a.m.
