Box Score GALESBURG, Illinois – The Prairie Fire put an emphatic end to a two-game skid with a 7-0 win over Rockford University on Saturday at Jorge Prats Field.
First-year
Kayla Brown (Sacramento, CA, Wilton Christian) had the biggest game of her brief college career with five goals, which ranks in a tie for second all-time for goals in a match with Lloy Brodnicki, who also had five in 1993 against Illinois College. The school record-holder is Megan Owens, who scored seven goals against MacMurray College in 1999.
Brown - who took 15 shots (#2 in school history behind Brodnicki's 16) - got started early, firing a shot past the Rockford keeper for a 1-0 Knox lead just 5:08 into the contest.
Sophomore
Margaret Stanger (Madison, WI, Madison West) followed with her second goal of the season at the 23:00 mark for a 2-0 advantage that the Prairie Fire maintained at the intermission.
The Regents (1-5-1) fell in a 3-0 hole on an own goal credited to Knox less than five minutes into the second stanza.
Brown did the rest of the damage for the Prairie Fire. She scored her second goal of the contest at the 56:01 mark, her third at 74:50 – assisted by first-year
Angelica Gamez (Pico River, CA, El Rancho), her fourth 83:24 into the match – assisted by first-year
Kelsie Pos (Salt Lake City, UT, Skyline), and then her fifth goal about 90 seconds later.
Knox held a 25-2 advantage in total shots, including 14-1 on goal, in winning for the second straight year against Rockford. Sophomore goalie
Theresa Birzer (Fort Dodge, IA, Fort Dodge) posted her third shutout of the season for the Fire.
Knox will try to improve on its 0-2 start in Midwest Conference play with three straight road matches against league foes beginning on October 4 at Ripon College. The young Prairie Fire team visits Lawrence University on October 5, and then travels to Cornell College on October 11.
