Carleton Gets Past Women's Soccer in ACM Play

NORTHFIELD, Minnesota – The Prairie Fire were unable to hold off Carleton College in the first match for both teams in the 2014 ACM Soccer Showcase.

The host Knights defeated Knox 3-0 in a contest that featured strong defense by both squads.

Carleton (2-1) did not allow the Prairie Fire a shot in the match.  Knox, meanwhile, fought off 27 shots by the Knights, including 13 on goal.  Sophomore Theresa Birzer (Fort Dodge, IA, Fort Dodge) recorded 10 saves in goal for the visitors.

Carleton, which had a 6-5 record in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) last year, staked out to an early 1-0 lead with a goal at the 6:53 mark.  The Knights extended their advantage to 2-0 less than a minute before the break on a score off of a loose ball close to the goal.

The Knox defense held tight from there until Carleton scored its third goal off of a corner at 80:44.

The Prairie Fire (0-2) resume play on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. against Coe College.  The match with the Kohawks (0-3) will be played at Carleton.
