Turnovers Costly for Football Team

GALESBURG Illinois – Knox (2-2) had four costly errors that led to 25 Scots points as Macalester defeated the Fire 46-19. Both teams are .500 as they head into divisional play.

The game started well for Knox, which scored on the opening drive as Matt McCaffrey (Wilmette, IL, New Trier) found Mathew Hemmingsen (Galesburg, IL, Carl Sandburg College) for a four-yard touchdown pass to lead 7-0.

After forcing Macalester to go three and out, Knox again drove down the field but was stopped on fourth and goal from the two-yard line.

Knox could not stop Macalester on their next possession, as they moved the ball 98 yards on eight plays to tie the game 7-7.

Knox took the lead back early in the second quarter when McCaffrey found Ilir Emini (Yorkville, IL, Yorkville)  for 15 yards to go ahead 13-7.

Macalester scored the next four touchdowns, with three of them only totaling five yards of offense for the Scots as two turnovers and a blocked punt gave them great field position.

Knox got on the board for the third and final time in the third quarter when Jared Zanger (Quincy, IL, Quincy) ran it in from seven yards out.

Macalester scored twice more before the quarter ran out, with a 48-yard run from Zandy Stowell and a 10-yard run from Liam Peebles after a fumbled kick off return.

Knox outgained Macalester 405 to 308 and controlled the time of possession, but also led in turnovers with four, all leading to Macalester touchdowns.

Knox will go on the road next Saturday to take on Lake Forest College (1-3). The kickoff is at 2:00 p.m.
