GALESBURG, Illinois – A comeback bid by the Prairie Fire ran out of time in a 2-1 loss to Coe College on Friday at Jorge Prats Field.
Neither team was able to send a shot past the other's goalkeeper until the Kohawks broke through on a penalty kick by Kelsey Fauser at the 74:11 mark. Fauser struck again with a shot from the left wing that trickled in and put Knox in a 2-0 hole.
Playing their home-opener, the Prairie Fire (1-1) sliced the deficit to 2-1 on a penalty kick of their own. Sophomore
Kayla Brown (Roseville, CA, Wilton Christian) found the back of the net for her second goal of the season 82:26 into the contest.
Coe (2-0) held on the rest of the way to secure the win.
Knox had a 17-12 edge in total shots – led by Brown with seven, but Kohawk goalie MJ Winterer stopped 10 of the 11 shots sent her way. First-year keeper
Sierra Daniger (Colorado Springs, CO, Air Academy) recorded five saves for the Fire.
Knox is back in action on Sunday at home against Blackburn College. The start time is scheduled at 4:00 p.m.
