GALESBURG, Illinois—The Prairie Fire Women's Soccer team has reached their second consecutive Midwest Conference Championship game after a well played match against the Green Knights of St. Norbert College.
Knox (18-0-1) played a very aggressive game in the first half, outnumbering the Knights in shots, corner kicks, and time of possession; Knox also committed two offsides in the half. The ball seemed to be on the St. Norbert side of the field for a good deal of the half, and it eventually paid off. In the 30th minute,
Briana Quintana (Santa Rosa, CA, Roseland University Prep) crossed a well placed pass to
Jessica Petersen (Brooklyn Park, MN, Champlin Park) who buried it in the back of the net.
Knox then played fantastic defense the rest of the match,
Sierra Daniger (Colorado Springs, CO, Air Academy) made 4 saves in the second half and the Green Knights could not get anything going against the tough Fire defense. Just for good measure, in the 75th minute,
Haley Archuleta (Salt Lake City, UT, Highland) sent a long pass down the middle of the field for
Kayla Brown (Roseville, CA, Wilton Christian), who controlled the ball and fired in a goal to make the game 2-0 Fire. That goal turned out to be much more important as St. Norbert scored a late goal in a comeback attempt. However, the Fire defense held strong for the victory.
The score ended 2-1 Knox, who now moves on to the Midwest Conference Championship game for the second consecutive season. They will look to extend their season when they take on Grinnell College tomorrow at Jorge Prats Field at 2:00 p.m.
