EUREKA, Illinois – The Prairie Fire women's basketball team went on the road to play against Eureka College. The Prairie Fire were looking for a bounce back after a tough loss against North Central College.
Senior Karlie Thorn opened up the scoring with a jumper after a steal. Eureka College went on a mini-run to go up 17-8 which caused Knox to call a timeout. The score would be 19-10 after the end of the first. Knox would make up a bit of the deficit in the second quarter. Junior Jarrelyn McCall hit a mid-range jumper and then followed it up with a three-pointer to bring Knox within two. Quickly after, first-year Jessica Lee got a steal and converted a pair of free throws to tie up the game at 21-21. McCall would hit another trey to put Knox up three. The Prairie Fire built up a 36-27 headed into halftime.
Knox dominated the opening minutes of the third quarter. The Prairie Fire went on a run led by Thorn. At the end of the third quarter Knox held a 61-51 lead. Thorn continued her hot second half with two more three pointers in the fourth quarter. Knox had control the rest of the way despite a mini-run by Eureka. The second half dominance came behind a big half from Thorn, who finished with 26 points. She was 5-of-6 from the charity stripe and had a 7-for-9 showing from the field in the second half. Jarrelyn McCall was the second leading scorer with 14 points and Kyra Huffman added 11.
"We played very well in the second and third quarters to take the lead after a slow start," said head coach Emily Cline. "The team is really starting to show their potential, I am excited for what the rest of the year will bring."
The win was their first of the season and moved their record to 1-1. Knox will host Rockford on November 21 for their home opener. Come out and support your Prairie Fire!
