GALESBURG, Illinois— The Knox College Prairie Fire women's basketball team suffered a defeat in overtime to the Buena Vista Beavers by a score of 76-65. The Prairie Fire fought back valiantly in the second half to tie the game, only to be overpowered in overtime.
Knox struggled in the first half to find a consistent rhythm against a tall Beaver defense. While they limited Buena Vista to only 41.4% from the field and drew 11 fouls, their own offensive attack struggled. Jarrelyn McCall led the way for the Prairie Fire, scoring 11 points, grabbing seven rebounds, and in general providing a steady presence for Knox while keeping the game within reach. Unfortunately, the Buena Vista bench outscored the Knox bench 21-2, and that paved the way for a seven point Beaver lead at the half.
In the second half, though, Knox came out with a much more focused offensive game plan. Primarily working the ball around the point and looking for quick jump shots, Knox spread the scoring around very effectively. In addition, their persistent paint presence netted them 15 points from the charity stripe. Morgan Potter swatted away four shots, and in general the Prairie Fire limited Buena Vista to shooting only 23.3% in the second half, but the Beavers came back to tie the game at the end of regulation.
Unfortunately, Buena Vista's offense was lights out in overtime. Shooting 5-for-5 from the floor and 7-for-8 for free throws, the Beavers put up 20 points and overwhelmed Knox. Catessa Duran made one three-pointer and two free throws, but Knox as unable to overcome the onslaught and was defeated.
The Prairie Fire's next game is also the beginning of their conference slate, as they travel to face Ripon College on November 30 at 5:30 PM.
