THOUSAND OAKS, California—The Prairie Fire women's basketball team lost their second straight overtime game to conclude their trip to California.
Both teams got off to a sluggish start, but the Knox offense came alive midway through the first quarter to build up a 9-4 lead. Cal Lutheran fought back, but the Prairie Fire maintained a 13-10 lead at the end of one quarter. Knox continued to lead for much of the second quarter, but late 8-0 run from the Regals gave them a 26-23 lead heading into halftime.
Cal Lutheran added to their lead in the third quarter, leading by as many as eight points. The Prairie Fire battled back to a one-point deficit with 2:01 remaining, but trailed by four heading into the fourth quarter. The Regals worked their way to a nine-point lead in the opening minutes of the final quarter, but Knox quickly brought the deficit back to just two. Cal Lutheran responded to again lead by nine, but the Prairie Fire kept fighting and tied the game up at 62-62 with 38 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.
Knox struck first in the overtime period when Karlie Thorn drained a pair of free throws with 3:57 to play. That lead would remain intact for about a minute, but the Regals soon took a 68-64 lead with 1:28 left on the clock. Jarrelyn McCall hit three free throws to bring the Prairie Fire to within one in the final minute. Cal Lutheran converted a three-pointer with 35 seconds to play and forced Knox to foul. The Regals hit 5-of-6 from the line to earn the 76-71 victory.
McCall finished with a game-high 23 points thanks to a 10-for-13 showing from the charity stripe. Kyra Huffman earned the double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Morgan Potter also poured in 12 points.
The Prairie Fire return to action on December 29 as they resume conference play with a visit to Lawrence.
