Softball Splits Two in Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Florida—The Prairie Fire softball team went 1-1 on the second day of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
 
Knox (3-5) defeated Newbury College 10-3 in their opening game.  However, the Prairie Fire were defeated by Curry College 5-1 to close out their second day of games at the GCCC.
 
Knox opened the scoring early against Newbury by scoring 1 run in the 1st.  Newbury responded by scoring 1 in the top half of the 3rd to tie the score at 1-1.  Knox then answered with a big offensive inning pushing across 4 runs in the bottom half of the 3rd to take a 5-1.  Things got closer as Newbury put together a 2 run 4th inning.  However, Knox put the game out of reach as they pushed across 5 runs in the 6th.  The game ended with a 10-3 Prairie Fire victory.
 
The second game saw the Prairie Fire take on Curry College.  Knox fell behind in the 1st 4-0 but quickly responded with a run in the 2nd.  Curry was able to get one back in the bottom half of the 2nd to take a 5-1 lead.  Both sets of bats were held scoreless the rest of game resulting in a 5-1 defeat for the Prairie Fire.    
 
Casey Hipp tallied 4 hits, 2 runs and 2 RBIs.  Valerie Froeming also added 3 hits, 1 run and 2 RBIs.
 
The Prairie Fire will take on UW- Superior and North Central College on Saturday during the third day of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
