Women's Soccer Defeats Beloit on Senior Day

GALESBURG, Illinois - On a brisk Saturday morning, the Prairie Fire women's soccer team defeated the Beloit Buccaneers by a final score of 2-0. The win continues their unbeaten streak in conference play, while giving quite a show to the Family and Friends in attendance. The team also celebrated seniors Katy Coseglia, Annie Peterson, Leah Aspinwall, Jenna Milligan, and Abigail Thillman.

It was clear from the beginning that Knox would be able to dominate in every facet of the game. The Prairie Fire managed to hold the Buccaneers to only one shot on goal in the first half, and their defensive coverage was extremely effective. Unfortunately for Knox, their offensive performance was a bit uneven. While they managed to get several shots off, including some nice efforts from Olivia Grierson and Jenna Li, none of them proved to be too challenging for Beloit's keeper Audrey Ketterer, and as a result the game remained scoreless entering the half.

The second half saw Knox's offense produce much more than it had in the first. Alyx Farris had two wonderful shots on goal early on, and Knox's physical style of play resulted in multiple yellow cards being handed out to Beloit. The Prairie Fire defense also clamped down even tighter, not allowing a single shot on goal. As the half wound down and it appeared Knox might receive an undeserved draw, Lydia Mitchell sent through a ranging shot that provided the first score of the game in the 86th minute. Not to be outdone, Farris finally scored a minute later after her wonderful play in the second half, giving Knox a late insurance goal and putting the game out of reach.

"I was really proud of how resilient our team was today in staying hungry to finally get some goals and the win on senior day," said senior Annie Peterson.

The Prairie Fire look ahead to tomorrow when they host Lake Forest College at 11:00 a.m.
