Women's Soccer Falls at Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa—The Prairie Fire women's soccer team fell to the Cornell College Rams today by a final score of 1-0. The loss is their first in conference play, and makes their final record for the regular season 12-5-2.

The game got off to a quick start, with Jenna Li narrowly missing out on scoring the game's first goal less than 30 seconds into the match. Li continued to pound the goal with shots throughout the half, but was unable to convert on any of her opportunities. Knox appeared to have the upper hand, as they only allowed Cornell to shoot twice, with neither of those being on goal. In the 32nd minute, however, fouls committed by the Prairie Fire in their own penalty box provided the Rams the opportunity to score the opening goal on a penalty kick. As a result, Knox entered the half down 1-0.

Knox tried to get the momentum back as the second half began, as their midfielders pounded shots on goal, but had no luck in the process. Li and Lydia Mitchell narrowly missed out on scoring goals on shots that skimmed the top post, and their frustration over their lack of luck was apparent. Mounting one final attack, Haleigh Lecklitner drove a powerful shot that was barely saved by Cornell's keeper, and the Prairie Fire could not quite find the equalizing goal.

The Prairie Fire look forward to hosting the Midwest Conference tournament when they play four seed Lake Forest this Friday at 11:00 a.m.
