Women's Soccer Wins Fourth Straight

GALESBURG, Illinois— The Knox College Prairie Fire women's soccer team defeated the Marian University Sabres at Jorge Prats Field on Saturday by a score of 3-1. The win improved their record to 4-2-1 and increased their win streak to four.

Knox quickly established itself in the first half, sending several on goal within the first 10 minutes. This barrage quickly tired out the Sabre defense, and in the 13th minute Olivia Grierson slotted away a nice shot with an assist by Lydia Mitchell. While the Prairie Fire offense maintained their blistering pace, the Knox defense suffocated any attack from Marian, limiting them to only three shots total in the first half. This allowed them to enter the break with the score still at 1-0.

The defensive efforts for Knox ramped up even more in the second half, as all Marian could muster were a series of fouls. The Prairie Fire, on the other hand, continued their prolific shooting on goal. Mitchell used the tired legs of the defenders to her advantage as she scored on a shot that was assisted by Grierson in the 71st minute. Unfortunately, Marian immediately followed this up with a breakaway goal by Jenae Balken not 30 seconds later. Knox kept the pressure on regardless, and in the 87th minute Makenna Kuecks scored an insurance goal that would secure the Prairie Fire win.

"We have been playing really good soccer lately," said head coach Taylor Houck. "We will see how we respond with another game tomorrow."

Knox travels to Chicago tomorrow to face off against the Illinois Institute of Technology Scarlet Hawks at 6 p.m.
