DE PERE, Wisconsin—The Prairie Fire women's soccer team defeated the St. Norbert Green Knights 2-0 on Sunday. The victory gives them their first conference win of the season, and makes them undefeated during this weekend's slate of games.
The first half was a testament to the physical, rough style of soccer that was played today. Fouls were plenty on both sides, and neither team was able to get many quality offensive chances. Brooklyn Deming managed to get a few shots off and help draw several fouls, but nothing came of the few chances she had. St. Norbert's continued to play aggressively, with not many offensive opportunities but plenty of fouls and hard tackles. The Prairie Fire began to adjust to this, and towards the end of the half began to break away more often from the Green Knight defense. Despite the increase in shots, the score remained 0-0 as the first 45 minutes wound down.
Knox continued to draw fouls as the second half began, at one point drawing five in a six minute span. The Prairie Fire finally managed to use these to their advantage, as an Alyx Farris goal off a rebound provided the first score of the game in the 61st minute. Five minutes later, Farris scored again, doubling the Knox advantage and seemingly putting the game out of reach. Knox transitioned to playing a more defensive game after the second goal, sending away all Green Knight efforts to score. This allowed the Prairie Fire to coast until the end of the game, preserving their victory along the way.
"The team did a great job responding after 110 minutes of soccer yesterday," said head coach Taylor Houck. "We battled a tough St. Norbert team, but were able to both threaten offensively and also keep a clean sheet defensively. Great weekend on the road, excited to continue to work hard."
Knox takes a detour from conference play when they host Wisconsin-Whitewater this Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
