GALESBURG, Illinois— The Knox Prairie Fire women's basketball team defeated the Monmouth Fighting Scots by a final score of 69-55. With the win, Knox has won 6 of their last 7, and look to be in good standing in the conference. Jarrelyn McCall became the all-time leading scorer in school history during the game as well.
The first half saw Knox fall victim to unfortunate errors. Despite shooting 50% from beyond the arc, the only shot 39.2% total. Kyra Huffman put up 10 points and five rebounds for the Prairie Fire, as she maintained a steady presence on both ends of the floor. Knox's defense, however, was uncharacteristically leaky, allowing 51.7% shooting from the floor despite maintaining a stingy defensive standing. As a result, they entered the half down by four.
In the second half, Knox really put the pedal to the metal in terms of defensive performance. The Prairie Fire forced 10 turnovers, and limited Monmouth to shooting 20.8% from the field. Huffman put up 13 more points and an impressive 10 rebounds to secure the double-double for the night. Knox was stingy on both ends of the floor, and they turned around their performance from the second half to storm back and secure the lead.
Huffman led Knox with 23 points and 15 rebounds. McCall finished with 15 points to bring her career total to 1,296. Catessa Duran added 11 points and eight rebounds.
"That was a huge win tonight," said head coach Emily Cline. "We played great defense in the second half. Kyra dominated in the paint on both ends. I am really happy for our team, especially our seniors. I am so proud of Jarrelyn, becoming the all-time leading scorer is a wonderful accomplishment. Also, what a great moment for her to do it at home in a crucial conference game against Monmouth. Jarrelyn deserves this special moment."
Knox looks to continue winning when they host Beloit this Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
