MOUNT VERNON, Iowa— The Knox Prairie Fire women's basketball team fell by a score of 57-48 this Saturday against the Cornell College Rams. The loss snaps their five game win streak, and moves their overall record 13-8 on the season.
The first two quarters went rather well for the Prairie Fire. Jarrelyn McCall used a perfect 4-for-4 showing from beyond the arc to put up 15 points in addition to grabbing four rebounds. The team as a whole used McCall's dangerous three point shooting to lure the Ram defense to the perimeter, then cut inside to get easy looks. Unfortunately, the team could not convert on very many of those opportunities, and Cornell managed to stay in the game. Even with Knox's strong defense efforts, the game was tied at 26 apiece at the end of the half.
The Prairie Fire's offense was not able to maintain its strengths in the second half. They only managed to shoot 20% from the field, including going 3-10 from downtown. Knox managed to pull down an impressive number of rebounds, but could not put any second chances back into the bucket. Their defense remained strong, limiting Cornell to only shooting 32% in the half, but that small difference allowed the Rams to build up to their final nine point lead.
McCall led the Prairie Fire with 23 points and eight rebounds.
"We battled today," said head coach Emily Cline. "I was proud of our fight. We were a few possessions away from pulling out a great victory. Jarrelyn had a great game today."
Knox looks to add another win onto their record when they host Monmouth College this Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
