Women's Soccer Wins Season Opener

GALESBURG, Illinois - The Prairie Fire women's soccer team defeated Illinois College 6-0 on Sunday in their season opener.

Lydia Mitchell got the scoring going in the second minute of the game as she weaved between defenders and found the back of the net.

Mitchell then assisted Michaela Thawley at the 20:16 mark and scored another goal in the 26th minute to expand the Knox lead.

Sarah McCracken scored the first goal of her collegiate career as she converted a penalty kick at the 62:00 mark. Thawley scored her second goal of the game less than a minute later.

McCracken found Olivia Grierson in front of the net for the final goal for the Prairie Fire with just under 20 minutes to play.

Knox outshot the Lady Blues 22-6 on the day, including an 11-2 advantage in shots on goal.

"It was great to get back on the field to compete," said head coach Taylor Houck. "We were able to accomplish many of the things we have been working on in practice, but still need to get better in some aspects. Still a great first showing."

The Prairie Fire return to action on May 1 as they travel to Lake Forest.
